TPBC Develops Vision Statement for People with Disabilities Program
Ameila Cooper, TPBC Board Director, and CEO John Leech have been hard at work developing a Vision, Mission and Goals statement for our STEM Pathways : empowering abilities program. The Vision statement: A world where everyone has fair and equal opportunities for education and employment in technology, especially people with disabilities working in STEM-related professions. EMCON President Frank Rizzardo, AScT Endorses Statement on Accreditation
"Nationally recognized accreditation has been the hallmark of Canadian portability for students across this country . As employers it is a significant benefit to be able to recognize that students (possible employees) have achieved the national standard of education. We operate in BC, Alberta and Ontario so it is helpful NOT to have three or worse sets of standards to rate individuals competence."

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Thompson Rivers University has named Dr. Airini, an internationally recognized researcher, teacher, and leader in higher education, as its next President and Vice-Chancellor. Her five-year term begins July 1.
Currently holding the role of Provost and Vice-President Academic at the University of Saskatchewan, Airini is known for her work on student success, equity, and education systems reform. She served as Dean of TRU’s Faculty of Education and Social Work from 2014 to 2021.
“Returning to TRU is both an honour and a responsibility,” said Airini. “It’s an enormous privilege to take on this role. We know that TRU became a full university 20 years ago because of this community’s strong vision and advocacy,” she said. “It is from these roots that this dynamic university is serving the region, and quietly yet boldly changing the province and the world.”

University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) has appointed Dr. James Mandigo as its next President and Vice-Chancellor. He succeeds Dr. Joanne MacLean, who will retire in June.
Mandigo, currently UFV’s Provost and VP Academic, served as acting president in 2023, and steered the university through a challenging time of transition post-COVID with his calm and level-headed leadership.
“James is a passionate educator and the UFV Board of Governors views him as the ideal person to lead UFV into the future,” Board Chair John Pankratz said. “Building on the steady foundation that Dr. MacLean has created, we believe Dr. Mandigo will provide strong, strategic direction as the university continues to realize its vast potential.”

Derek Dickson SIgns MoA for Wildfire Training in S America
From April 28-May 4 two members of Vancouver based FIre Rescue International Training Association Jeffrey Moore (Left) and Derek Dickson (second from right) traveled to the “Region Trifinio” area of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to sign a formal memorandum of agreement, establishing the foundation of wildfire training for the biosphere that is shared by the three countries. Plans will now begin to structure a program that will be delivered in 2026.
"Great work, Derek, on your leadership in supporting other countries as they build skills to manage wildfires," enthused TPBC CEO John Leech. "Derek is a TPBC member who is contributing to the growth and development of our organization. We appreciate Derek's leadership in managing fire safety at YVR and in other countries".

Marlon Coy-Veliz, CTech Appointed Community Rep - Victoria
We're pleased to share a bit about Marlon, who is serving as a CR in Victoria.
Marlon Coy-Veliz has been a Structural Technologist for 10 years. He attended KPU (Kwantlen Polytechnic University) in 2012 where he completed certificates in Architectural, Mechanical and Structural Drafting and Design. His career has included working at small, medium and large engineering firms where he’s been involved in projects ranging from small residential renovations to concrete towers.
Prior to his current path, Marlon was a self-employed painter for 20 years which taught him:
All vital skills in his role as a Structural Technologist at Herold Engineering Ltd.
Marlon received his CTech designation from the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC in October 2023.He has a passion for learning and sharing knowledge/ skills/ resources with others.
Marlon is excited to start his role as a Community Representative for TPBC.
