Build Better BC – Statement #3

The construction sector needs skills engineering and applied science techs, an issue that is front and centre for the BC and federal  governments, Skilled Trades BC, and a number of advocacy associations. The industry is also in need of the  ‘middle level’ of Tech Talent filled by engineering and applied science technologists, technicians and technical  specialists. TPBC applauds the great work that has gone into shining a spotlight in recent decades on the skilled  trades. It is essential that we also address the real need for our technical workforce. Groups like the Vancouver  Island Construction Association (VICA) are stepping up, with their CEO, Rory Kulmala sending a signal of  support for the work of TPBC, “We are pleased to express our strong support for Technology Professions BC  (TPBC) and its efforts to advocate for engineering and applied science technology education and careers. Many  of our members—and a significant portion of the broader construction industry—are Applied Science  Technologists (AScTs) or Certified Technicians (CTech), whose credentials and contributions are vital to the  success of our sector.”

Given a major effort to create a ONE CANADA economy TPBC believes there is an immediate need to showcase  the great wealth-creating careers in engineering technology. It is estimated that these technology practitioners  contribute $12 billion to the BC economy and enjoy a rewarding and well paid career. Rory is a prime example of  a technologist who has worked in the private and not-for-profit sectors, creating a fabulous career and lending  his expertise to the growth and development of the construction industry.

Rory concluded, “TPBC’s focus on credential recognition, professional development, mentorship, and  inclusivity aligns with our industry’s need for a skilled, mobile, and diverse workforce. We believe TPBC’s work  will strengthen standards, support workforce mobility, and enhance the construction sector’s access to  qualified technical talent across British Columbia”

BUILD BETTER BC Recommendation:
That every effort be made by governments, advocacy groups and educators to enhance the profile of careers as an engineering or applied science technologist, technician or technical specialist.
